ABOUT ME . . .

I was born in the Mojave Desert of southern California and raised in Paradise, a small town in the foothills of the Sierra-Nevada mountains in northern California. I first started taking pictures in my high school photography class taught by Philip Wallick. After moving to Provo, Utah to attend UVSC and later BYU, I contined to take pictures for fun and occasionallly for friends and family. I spent 2 years as an LDS missionary in southern Italy and was able to photographically document many of my experiences there. After returning and resuming my studies, I took more photography and graphic design classes in college (including courses in Photoshop) and made money on the side doing engagement and wedding phootgraphy. So far I have 13 years experience in capturing images both digitaly and on film. I’ve recently decided to delve into photography as a full-time venture by starting Craig Tovey Photography.

I enjoy taking pictures of a wide variety of subjects as can be seen from my portfolio galleries, but my main area of interest is people. I am constantly amazed by the emotion you can capture in that split second of the shutter opening to record a small fraction of our lives. Photos, in our culture, are cherished pieces of memorabilia that often stay with us our entire lives and onto the following generations. I feel priveleged to be able to be the engineer who records these memories for others. For this reason I prefer candid pictures and try to limit as much as possible posed shots when i’m taking portraits. But as you can see from the self portrait to the left that sometimes a candid shot isn’t always an option.

Thanks,
Craig
